Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
