A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
